Why Friday was awesome…
I woke up Friday morning to an array of emails, warnings, and texts from Texas State University saying that only emergency personnel needed to come into work. I mumbled out a smile and headed to look out at the backyard.
“Hrmph. Ice. Goodie,” I thought.
Then I opened the garage door. And snow! I tiptoed over to the roommate’s door, knocked lightly, and said that Santa had come!
Okay, so, it’s not a lot of snow, but it’s a lot for us Texans. And I definitely remember the great freeze-over in College Station in January or February of 2007, when I was the only person I knew who had to go to work… at Officemax… where I was the Desktop Publisher… And like, four people came in, and did nothing but bitch about how we are spoiled as Texans. It wasn’t fun. My Buick was frozen solid, and everyone I knew sleeping over at Briarcrest had fallen down the icy staircase at least once – myself included. And two other recovered ACL reconstructive surgery patients were living there! I had to get someone to drive me to work because they had covered parking. Had I just slept at my own apartment, I could very easily have just walked to work… Eh. That was back then.
My friend had to work Friday. I remember how that felt.
Back to the story. I made coffee, and Leeta and I stood outside in our pajamas, hoodies, jackets, whathaveyous, and watched our neighborhood twinkle with little bits of frost that didn’t immediately melt away – as Texan snowflakes often do.
Now, everyone who’s been to our house knows that I’ve been straight up talking about turning our steep, steep driveway into an ice sledding as soon as it freezes over. My initial idea of just an extra shower curtain (in reserve for future slip-n-sliding adventures) was a bust, but luckily, Leeta found a pool floatie in her closet while we were looking for ski goggles for hilarious effect. Guess what just so happens to make the perfect driveway snow-sled?
Leeta’s turn: Yes, she is in snowman pajamas, totally having a ball!
We even let one of the neighborhood kids have a turn at our snowhill… It was his first snow.
And, since boyfriend decided he wanted to go out for breakfast (how did he know I love doing that?) I thought I would prepare a special little greeting for him… He’s such a good sport and lets me torture him sometimes 🙂
Time to shoot the gap.
We ended up waiting about an hour and a half on him, and by that time it was lunch. As it turns out, since our subdivision is on a hill, a bunch of people slid off the road that leads to our neighborhood. Boyfriend told us a harrowing tail about how he drove through grass to get to our house, and all these other dangers that could have happened to his car.
And how did we thank him for risking the odds to see me?
We pummeled him with snowballs.
Then had a three person snowball fight in the street.
It was awesome.
We even saved three snowballs to remember this day… They’re still in our freezer.
